Her mother bequeathed to her an antique blush branch coral necklace which
eventually broke after years of wear. Deborah longed to wear it once again but
with an updated look. She learned to string the delicate coral branches, adding
more strands filled with white pearls and other semi-precious stones. This
inspired her to recreate other pieces in her jewelry cache, transforming raw
stones into an art form.
Having created unusual pieces for her family and friends, she has gained
notice from jewelry connoisseurs in New York, Washington, DC, Houston, Michigan,
Illinois, Seattle, Los Angeles, and Hawaii.
In March 2007, Deborah was featured
on Southern Living ’s website: “…Deborah Long-Shirley, a leading designer in San
Antonio…strings delicate coral branches, pearls, and other semi-precious stones
into Southwest, Ethnic, Couture, and elegant but easy designs for the beach.”
Deborah also uses her jewelry to help others, having donated necklaces to the
Air Force Charity Ball, Pentagon Federal Credit Unions “Night of Heroes,” and
Junior League in DC, the Air Force’s Fischer House and Jr. League in San
Antonio.
